2022 m. gruodžio 21 d., trečiadienį, 18 val. Vienybės aikštėje Kaune (prie K. Donelaičio g. 60) vyks turas „Pokalbiai apie Kauno Mitinio Žvėries buveines su… Liudu Mažyliu“ po parodą „Mitinio Žvėries buveinės Kauno modernizmo fotografiniuose pjūviuose“. Jį ves Vasario 16-osios Akto originalo atradėjas, Vytauto Didžiojo universiteto garbės profesorius, Europos Parlamento narys Liudas Mažylis. Tarp parodoje atvaizduotų Kauno modernistinių pastatų yra ir L. Mažylio vaikystės namas. Pokalbių metu sulauksime įdomių įžvalgų ir naujų eksponatų reikšmių. Renginys yra nemokamas ir atviras visai visuomenei, todėl kviečiame atvykti su šeima, draugėmis ir draugais.

Liudas Mažylis (g. 1954 m. gegužės 19 d. Kaune) – Europos Parlamento narys, Lietuvos politikos ir visuomenės veikėjas, mokslininkas, Vytauto Didžiojo universiteto (VDU) profesorius, Vasario 16-osios Lietuvos Nepriklausomybės Akto originalo atradėjas.

Europos Parlamento narys taip pat džiaugiasi, kad prieš gražiausias metų šventes jis turės progą dar kartą susitikti su kauniečiais ir miesto svečiais. „Dėkoju organizatoriams už kvietimą vesti pokalbių turą po Kauno Mitinio Žvėries buveines. Tai unikali proga „pasivaikščioti“ po Kauno rūsius kitaip, – teigia L. Mažylis. – O dar ir labai gražus Advento laikotarpis, labai gera bus susitikti su renginio dalyviais savo gimtajame Kaune. Fotomeno festivalis KAUNAS PHOTO 2021 m. surengė meninę rezidenciją, kurios metu menininkas iš Naujosios Zelandijos Chirag Jindal žvelgė giliau į Kauno modernizmo ikoninius pastatus, į vieną atvaizdą sutalpindamas tiek jų matomąją dalį, tiek ir požemius.

Pasak idėjos autoriaus ir projekto meno vadovo Mindaugo Kavaliausko, paslaptimi išliks menininko kūrybinis metodas, tačiau kūriniai praskleidžia paslapties skraistę į tai, ko kauniečiai ir miesto svečiai, ko gero, niekada nepamatytų – požemius, ir jų lokaliai globalias istorijas, kuriuose galimai nuo seno slėpėsi mitinis Kauno žvėris.

Paroda rodoma iki sausio 8 d. Vienybės aikštėje po atviru dangumi ištisą parą ir yra skirta žiūrėti tamsos valandomis.

On 26 November 2022, at 3 pm, KAUNAS PHOTO festival will host the presentation of the exhibition “Hiding Places of the Mythical Beast in Photographic Cross-Sections of Kaunas Modernism” and a meeting with the project’s curator Mindaugas Kavaliauskas and the New Zealand artist Chirag Jindal, who will be in Kaunas for one day. During the event, the audience will be introduced to the uniquely created iconography of Kaunas modernism, with a new approach to the medium of photography and a night-time experience of the exhibition for the visitors. The event will start at 3 p.m. in the Stephenson Hall of the BLC Business Centre (K. Donelaičio Str. 60, Building A, 1st floor), and from there, the whole audience will go on a tour of the outdoor exhibition, which will be displayed in the form of lightboxes in the adjacent Vienybės Square. The exhibition “Hiding Places of the Mythical Beast in Photographic Cross-Sections of Kaunas Modernism” will run until January 8. The exhibition will be accompanied by events. The event is part of “Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022” official closing “Act III of the Trilogy: THE CONTRACT”. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

In 2019, Mindaugas Kavaliauskas travelled to the InterPhoto festival in Bialystok with his solo exhibition “A-Spot”. Visiting the exhibition of the InterPhoto 2019 Grand Prize Candidates, Kaunas-based photographer and curator made his prediction that the prize would be won by an artist from New Zealand, who surrealistically depicted Auckland’s cityscapes and volcanic caverns merging them in one image. The prediction was confirmed, and, instead of congratulations, the art director of the KAUNAS PHOTO festival made a creative suggestion—why wouldn’t the artist try to expose the icons of Kaunas modernist architecture in the same creative way?

In September 2021, invited by the NGO Šviesos raštas, the artist Chirag Jindal from New Zealand was already working in Lithuania. He took part in the art residency organised by the KAUNAS PHOTO festival, during which he looked deeper into the interwar architecture of Kaunas. Although the technological execution of the project was complex, it could be described in simple terms as a combination of the facades and underground spaces, invisible to the passers-by, created by 3D laser scanning technology.

According to Karolina Krinickaite, coordinator of KAUNAS PHOTO 2021, the work schedule of the creative process during the art residency was extremely challenging, not only due to the complexity of coordinating the access to historical buildings, but also due to the demanding nature of equipment. The three-dimensional laser scanner used for the project is a rare and hardly available device not only in Kaunas, but in the entire country as well, and at this stage the company Northpoint.lt was of particular help by agreeing to collaborate in the technical implementation of the project with its own 3D scanner.

In the final results, both the façade and the basement of the buildings can be seen in one single image. “Unlike photography, there is little out of frame—the section cut reveals all at once and we are presented with past and present paraphernalia as they exist in-situ“, says the artist Jindal. According to the curator of the project and the author of the idea Kavaliauskas, the artworks lift the veil of mystery and show what Kaunas residents and visitors would otherwise never see—the underworld, and its locally global stories, where the Mythical Beast of Kaunas may have been hiding since ancient times. The eleven-image exhibition, which is best seen after dark, will show a rich typology of subterranean constructions: water reservoir, engine room, prison cells, workshop, archives… And all these spaces are enveloped by the unique stories of Kaunas and Lithuania’s past.

Jindal says that architectural objects appeared to him like “time capsules collecting layers of history”. “For me the search for the ‘mythical beast’ was synonymous with the search for the story of Kaunas, remnants of which could be found in these buildings—not only the iconic facades and the overall typology—but also the artifacts inherited in their deepest recesses. Many of these basements are unchanged, either unintentionally or through museification. By making deliberate section cuts through the unseen, evidence of this layered history begin to emerge”, explains the artist.

Chirag Jindal (born 1993) is an artist-surveyor working at the intersection of documentary journalism, new media art and contemporary cartography. After graduating with his Master’s Degree in Architecture in 2016, Jindal began exploring the role of terrestrial LiDAR as an emerging medium for photographic documentation.

His developing practice seeks to document our relationship to marginalised landscapes, in order to “unravel the hidden effects, and unseen layers, of human presence.” His research-based approach brings him in collaboration with groups close to his subjects, including scientists, landowners, indigenous groups and local government. Jindal is best known for his debut project Into The Underworld – an ongoing series that has gained critical recognition, including the 2020 Royal Photographic Society Under 30’s Award and the Bialystok Interphoto Grand Prix.

After completing its 18th edition in autumn 2021, the international photo art festival KAUNAS PHOTO has saved the realization of its last highlight for spring 2022.

For the occasion of the possibly last edition, the festival’s founder Mindaugas Kavaliauskas conceived the idea of honouring one of the patriarchs of Lithuanian photography, Antanas Sutkus, by embellishing the façade of the Ežerėlis Primary School with a motif of his work. The motif chosen for the mural was Antanas Sutkus’ “Mother’s Hand” (Vilnius, 1966, although some sources state 1965), depicting a girl holding her mother’s hand.

After the artist Marius Skrupskis completed the work and Mindaugas Kavaliauskas made a post about it on Facebook, the reactions to the work were overwhelming.

“The window of my work is directly facing this wall… I’ve watched this artist work every day, and the result is really something  … Thank you for the opportunity to see it so closely ,” Ieva shared her impressions.

“It looks amazing. Thank you very much. It will make us, the people of Ežerėlis, happy every day ,” wrote Asta on social media.

“Perfection. I went, stood, watched and wiped a tear. Very strong. THANK YOU.“, wrote Inutė.

Antanas Sutkus, a classic of Lithuanian photography, said that “Mindaugas Kavaliauskas has found yet another way to engage with photography through a direct participation of the people themselves. This is both a great appreciation and, at the same time, a responsibility—photography as an artistic element in a town has both an educational function and an emotional impact. I believe that “Mother’s Hand” will convey to the inhabitants of Jezerele the empathy that I feel for my native land.”

The Mayor of Kaunas District Municipality Valerijus Makūnas says that “Sutkus’s works have been acquired by the world’s most famous museums: the National Library in Paris, the International Center of Photography in New York, the Dresden Art Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and private collections. I am delighted that his work “Mother’s Hand” has become a part of the Ežerėlis school building.” Expressing his gratitude to the young generation photographer Mindaugas Kavaliauskas and the whole team for realising the idea, the mayor hinted that we should look forward to other news in the summer…

According to Mindaugas Kavaliauskas, the director of the KAUNAS PHOTO festival and the author of the idea, this work will remind the students attending the same school as the legendary photographer did, that you can grow up to be a talent of global significance, even if you come from a small village.

The sponsor of the KAUNAS PHOTO photography festival is the Lithuanian Council for Culture. The implementation of the mural was managed by Karolina Krinickaitė, the image was transferred onto the wall by the artist Marius Skrupskis. The international KAUNAS PHOTO photo art festival was held annually from 2004 to 2021.

The KAUNAS PHOTO festival commemorates the European Mobility Week and invites to celebrate the International Car-Free Day on 22 September with a guided tour on wheels around the festival’s outdoor exhibitions. The organisers encourage everyone to leave their cars, grab a bicycle or electric scooter and arrive alone, with family or friends by the Kaunas Castle, where the free and open to all tour will start at 17:30. The 1,5 hour 12-kilometre low-difficulty route will visit four open-air photography exhibitions. The tour will be held by the festival’s art director Mindaugas Kavaliauskas.

In 2021, European Mobility Week theme is “Safe and Healthy with Sustainable Mobility”. It pays tribute to the hardships felt by Europe – and the world – throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. European Mobility Week culminates on 22 September with the traditional World Car-Free Day. It is not the first time that the organisers of the KAUNAS PHOTO festival have joined the campaign, encouraging people to visit exhibitions using means of transport alternative to the car.

The Tour On Wheels will visit four open-air photography exhibitions of the 18th KAUNAS PHOTO festival. At each stop, the festival art director Mindaugas Kavaliauskas will present the work of the photographers featured there.

This year’s tour will star near the Kaunas Castle (in front of A. Jakšto St. 18) with the presentation of “Grandma Divers” by Alain Schroeder (Belgium, KAUNAS PHOTO STAR 2021 Finalist). Then the tour will follow the cycling path along the Nemunas riverbank to Žemieji Šančiai, where two exhibitions will be presented at the Square near A. Juozapavičiaus pr. 57: “Portraits of Quarantine” by Adas Vasiliauskas (Lithuania) and “The third phase (Paola)” by Francesco Amorosino (Italy). Then the tour will come back to the town centre and will finish at the Vienybės Square with the exhibition of the Winner of KAUNAS PHOTO STAR 2021—“Growing Old” by Marna Clarke (USA).

The outdoor exhibitions of the 18th KAUNAS PHOTO festival are shown at three more locations: “Portrait of Early Generation Z” by Elena Krukonytė (Lithuania) at Draugystės Park (Kovo 11-osios St., next to the bus stop “Draugystės park”), “2031” by Uta Genilke (Germany) at Kalniečiai Park (next to Savanorių Ave.) and “RENDEZ-VOUS” by Caroline Minjolle (Switzerland) at Chechnya Square.

Nušurmuliavus intensyvioms festivalio atidarymo dienoms, šią savaitę KAUNAS PHOTO programoje – lietuviški akcentai. Trečiadienį ir penktadienį bus atidarytos dvi naujos parodos po atviru dangumi – Ado Vasiliausko  „Karantino portretai“ ir Elenos Krukonytės „Ankstyvosios Z kartos portretas“, o sekmadienį vyks susitikimai su šiuo metu Lietuvoje reziduojančiu lietuvių kilmės JAV menininku Jonu Kulikausku ir lenkų fotomenininku Grzegorzu Jarmocewicz, sukūrusiu seriją apie lietuvius „Abipus sienos. Kodėl aš įsimylėjau Lietuvą?“, kuri yra rodoma šiųmetinėje festivalio programoje Kauno įvairių tautų kultūrų centre. Renginiai yra nemokami ir atviri visiems.

Kaip ir ankstesniais metais, festivalis KAUNAS PHOTO tradiciškai su lauko paroda keliaus į Žemųjų Šančių mikrorajoną, kur rugsėjo 8 d., trečiadienį, 18.30 val. skvere prie A. Juozapavičiaus pr. 57 bus pristatyta fotografijų serija „Karantino portretai“. Parodos atidaryme dalyvaus iš Vilniaus atvykęs jos autorius, fotografas Adas Vasiliauskas, pirmojo karantino metu 2020 metais sukūręs ir per visą pasaulį nuskambėjęs su šia dronu fotografuota žmonių, pozuojančius savo namų languose bei balkonuose, portretų serija. Po parodos atidarymo vakaras prasitęs netoliese esančioje fotostudijoje „No Name Studio“ (A. Juozapavičiaus pr. 31G), kur nuo 19 val. A. Vasiliauskas papasakos serijos „Karantino portretai“ užkulisius bei pristatys kitus savo projektus.

Rugsėjo 10 d. 17 val. Draugystės parko prieigose (Kovo 11-osios g., prie stotelės „Draugystės parkas“) vilnietė fotografė Elena Krukonytė pristatys ten atidaromą lauko parodą „Ankstyvosios Z kartos portretas“. Šį projektą sukurti autorę įkvėpė jos pačios pamąstymai apie santykį su laiku. Keldama būties klausimą – kodėl aš esu tokia, kokia esu? – ji bando rasti atsakymus, žvelgdama į bendraamžius, kuriuos įamžino jų pačių pasirinktoje vietoje, atskleidžiančioje, kas prisidėjo prie asmenybės formavimo. Nuo 18 val. Kauno Vinco Kudirkos viešosios bibliotekos Parko padalinyje (P. Lukšio g. 60) vyks E. Krukonytės kūrybos pristatymas „Žmogaus santykis su laiku, aplinka ir savimi per fotografiją“, kurio metu autorė plačiau papasakos apie savo kūrybą.

Rugsėjo 12 d., sekmadienį, festivalis KAUNAS PHOTO pakvies į du dienos metu vyksiančius renginius. 12.30 val. Kauno įvairių tautų kultūrų centre, ten pat rodomų fotografijų iš serijos „Abipus sienos. Kodėl aš įsimylėjau Lietuvą?“ apsuptyje, vyks susitikimas su šios serijos autoriumi, netoli Lietuvos sienos gimusiu lenkų fotomenininku Grzegorzu Jarmocewicz.

14 val. Kauno choralinėje sinagogoje (E. Ožeškienės g. 13) vyks susitikimas su lietuvių kilmės JAV fotomenininku Jonu Kulikausku. Menininkas pristatys šiuo metu Lietuvoje vystomą šiuolaikinės fotografijos projektą „Aš Dažnai Pamirštu“, apimantį holokausto, sovietų išniekinimo, nacionalizmo ir diasporos temas. Pritvirtinęs II-ojo pasaulinio karo laikų objektyvą prie naujai pagaminto 8×10 colių fotoaparato, įkrauto juodai baltomis plokštėmis, J.Kulikauskas fotografuoja dabartinį gyvenimą buvusiame Vilniaus gete.

The two-day long opening events of the 18th international photo art festival KAUNAS PHOTO culminated on the evening of September 3 with the announcement of the Winner of the festival’s competition. KAUNAS PHOTO STAR 2021 Award was granted to the eighty-one-year-old photographer Marna Clarke from USA and her work entitled “Growing Old”. The series will be on display in Kaunas as an outdoor exhibition at Vienybės Square until the end of October.

On September 2 and 3, the festival KAUNAS PHOTO opened exhibitions in nine indoor venues and five open-air public spaces in the city. The evening programme featured projections of works submitted to the festival’s open call on the theme of “Age”, a screening of the photographs from the series “Do Not Forget, You Are Not In Lithuania” by Martha Thomas (USA), accompanied by the readings of her aunt’s Daina Klimauskaitė’s memoirs of the youth spent in deportation in Siberia. The memoirs were read by the Lithuanian theatre and cinema actress Olita Dautartaitė, in presence of Daina Klimauskaitė herself and the author Martha Thomas, who is currently visiting Lithuania.

The Finalists of the KAUNAS PHOTO STAR competition greeted the audience via remote video conference, and after the screening of their series, the founder and art director of the festival Mindaugas Kavaliauskas, and the head of the Kaunas Photography Gallery, who is also a member of the the international and local KAUNAS PHOTO STAR jury panel, Gintaras Česonis, announced the Winner of the KAUNAS PHOTO STAR 2021 Award—Marna Clarke (USA) with her series of photographs “Getting Old”.

“On my 70th birthday, I woke from a dream in which I had rounded a corner and seen the end. This disturbing dream moved me to begin photographing the two of us, chronicling our time of growing old,” says the photographer about her work submitted to the KAUNAS PHOTO STAR competition on the theme “Age”, and hopes that her photographs will help others to come to terms with the inevitable future and to feel more comfortable in their own old age.

A total of eight series of the Finalists were shortlisted to compete for the main prize of the KAUNAS PHOTO STAR 2021 competition: “The Animal Within” by Fábio Cunha (Portugal), “Grandma Divers” by Alain Schroeder (Belgium), “Cut It Short” by Michal Solarski & Tomasz Liboska (United Kingdom / Poland), “The Suspended Youth” by Rosa Mariniello (Italy), “±100” by Magdalena Stengel (Germany), “Belles Mômes” by Clelia Rochat (Belgium), “Do Not Forget, You Are Not In Lithuania” by Martha Thomas (USA) and the wining series “Growing Old” by Marna Clarke (USA) with, who will receive a 2500 EUR cash prize. The works of all Finalists are integrated into the festival programme and are shown in the galleries and cultural venues of Kaunas as well as in the city’s open-air spaces.

In 2021, the 18th international photo art festival KAUNAS PHOTO will hold its opening tours on September 2 and 3 with the exhibition openings of fourteen artists from different countries. Both opening days will conclude with an evening programme starting at 20:00 in the BLC “Otto Hall”, featuring a presentation by Chirag Jindal (New Zealand), an artist and topographer working at the intersection of documentary journalism and contemporary cartography, and on 3 September, photography projections of the festival’s competition KAUNAS PHOTO STAR Finalists’ series and a virtual meeting of the Finalists with the audience. The Winner of the KAUNAS PHOTO STAR 2021 Award will be announced at the end of the evening event on 3 September and will receive a cash prize of EUR 2500. The evening programme will be accompanied by musical improvisations of Patris Židelevičius with cello and digital sounds, and pianist Kęstutis Paulaitis. The exact programme of the festival’s opening days can be found at the end of this announcement. The audience is welcome to join at any part of the opening tour. The opening events of KAUNAS PHOTO festival are open to all and free of charge.

The programme of the 18th KAUNAS PHOTO festival will focus on the threshold of adulthood, becoming an adult, the pros and cons, stories and feelings of being young, teenager, parent, mid-aged, retired, with or without grandchildren, hobby, job, retirement savings meeting the sunset of life. The exhibitions and events of the festival will be related to general or specific issues of life choices, crisis, joys, traditions, stereotypes, taboos, social norms and the impact of big data society on age groups. The open call to the festival, which received over a hundred proposals, showed that a critical mass of photographers is exploring an aging society, its joys and challenges.

Although traditionally the winner of the festival’s competition KAUNAS PHOTO STAR is announced at the Kaunas Photography Gallery, this year, due to the renovation of Vilnius Street, the gallery was closed, therefore, the works of the finalists of the KAUNAS PHOTO STAR 2021 competition are integrated into the festival’s programme and are shown in the outdoor spaces as well as in the galleries, cultural and art venues of Kaunas.

KAUNAS PHOTO 2021 programme in Kaunas will showcase nine photography exhibitions in indoor venues throughout September. Continuing the tradition of open-air exhibitions started in 2014, this year the festival will present seven outdoor exhibitions, placed in Chechnya Square, Kalniečių and Draugystės parks, A. Juozapavičiaus, V. Putvinskio streets, near Kaunas Castle, Vienybės Square. The festival’s outdoor exhibitions will be on display until the end of October.

The artistic program of this year’s festival is curated by a joint team: Mindaugas Kavaliauskas, Kristina Juraitė, Donatas Stankevičius, Fred Boucher and Karolina Krinickaitė. The festival’s programme will be updated and announced in separate press releases, on the festival’s website and “Facebook” page.

KAUNAS PHOTO is the longest running annual international photo art festival in Lithuania and the Baltic States. The festival founded by Mindaugas Kavaliauskas in 2004 is organized by the public institution “Šviesos raštas”. KAUNAS PHOTO is funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture as one of the strategic international art events in Lithuania.

18-asis tarptautinis fotomeno festivalis KAUNAS PHOTO kartu su KAUNAS 2022 vykdo projektą „Mitinio Kauno žvėries buveinės“, kuriame unikaliu būdu bus fotografuojami-skenuojami Kauno modernistiniai pastatai su tikslu sukurti vienu žvilgsniu nesuvokiamą miesto ikonografiją. Kiekvienoje galutinėje fotografijoje matysis pastato fasadas ar jo dalis ir rūsio ar požemio dalis – ta, kurioje gyvena mitinis Kauno žvėris.

Kūrinius rugsėjo mėnesį kurs menininkas Chirag Jindal iš Naujosios Zelandijos. Kiekvienas galutinis atvaizdas bus sukurtas unikaliu būdu iš daugelio pavienių atvaizdų. Rezultatas bus panašus į pridedamą iliustraciją, tik tai bus Kaune, o požemyje bus ne vulkaninės Oklando ertmės, bet požeminis gyvenimas.

Planuojama sukurti 10 tokių atvaizdų, siekiant, kad kiekvienas rūsys turėtų vis kitokią funkcinę paskirtį: slėptuvė, uogienių saugykla, sporto salė, vyno rūsys, muzikos repeticijų salė, pirtis ir kt. Galutiniai rezultatai bus rodomi didžiulių šviesdėžių pavidalu „Kaunas Europos kultūros sostinė 2022“ baigiamojoje dalyje Rotušės aikštėje.

Pakviestas į Lietuvą fotomeno festivalio KAUNAS PHOTO, beveik dvi savaites Kaune kūrė fotografas iš Prancūzijos Thierry Girard. Ant peties nešinas stambiu trikoju ir prie jo pritvirtinta vidutinio formato kamera, fotografas skersai išilgai naršė Kauno mikrorajonus. Meninės rezidencijos metu T. Girard fotografavo Kauno miesto vaizdus, kūrė žmonių portretus.

Neseniai 70-ąjį jubiliejų atšventęs Thierry Girard (g. 1951 m. Nantas, Prancūzija) – fotografas iš vakarų Prancūzijos. Jo kūryba grindžiama maršruto ir kelionės motyvais, apmąstant meninį miesto ir priemiesčio kraštovaizdžių vaizdavimą. Fotografas renkasi maršrutus, kuriuose yra istorinių, literatūrinių, meninių ar kultūrinių reikšmių. 1984 m. jo darbai buvo apdovanoti Prancūzijos „Niépce“ premija („Le Prix Niépce“), kuri vainikavo daug žadančią karjeros pradžią ir leido jam surengti parodas buvusiuose Palais de Tokyo rūmuose bei Nacionaliniame fotografijos centre.

Pasak Virginijos universiteto (JAV) docento Ari J. Blatt, fotomenininkas T.Girard išgarsėjo kurdamas fotografines tikrovės vizijas, kurios mums primena, „kad net patys paprasčiausi ir niekuo neišsiskiriantys kraštovaizdžiai prisideda prie mūsų kolektyvinio vietos įsivaizdavimo“.

„Vengdamas istorinių miestų centrų, vaizdingų kaimų vaizdų ir kitų lankytinų vietų, dėl kurių verta „padaryti lankstą“ pasak „Michelin“ gido, tačiau mieliau rinkdamasis mažiau išvažinėtus kelius į vietas, pasižyminčias praeities ir dabarties susiliejimu, dažnai esančias kažkur už įprasto kelio, Girard tyrinėja vietas, kurios kitu atveju paliktų mus abejingais, bet kurios, kaip rodo jo fotografijos, galbūt turi daugiau istorijų, nei gali pasirodyti iš pradžių“, – 2019 m. apie T. Girard kūrybą rašė Ari J. Blatt.

Prieš 10 metų fotomenininkas jau lankėsi Kaune. KAUNAS PHOTO ilgalaikiai partneriai asociacija-leidykla „Diaphane“ bei festivalis „Photaumnales“ (Bovė, Prancūzija) eilę metų vykdė projektą „Kelionės tikslas – Europa“, kurio kontekste siuntė fotografus skristi į skirtingus miestus iš pigių skrydžių Bovė oro uosto. 2011 m. fotografui T. Girard teko kelionės tikslas – Kaunas. Tuomet atvykęs menininkas didelio ir vidutinio formato kamerų žvilgsniuose atvaizdavo Kauną kaip jauną, džiaugsmingą miestą, kurio portretai, žmogiški peizažai ir urbanistiniai sluoksniai buvo jautriai sujungti į vieną vasaros sapną. Kuratorių Fred Boucher ir Mindaugo Kavaliausko kvietimu, T.Girard po dešimties metų pertraukos vėl dokumentavo Kauną, šįkart turėdamas laiko pakitusį miestą atrasti iš naujo.

KAUNAS PHOTO – ilgiausiai be pertraukų rengiamas kasmetis tarptautinis fotomeno festivalis Lietuvoje ir Baltijos šalyse.. Aštuonioliktojo festivalio renginiai prasidės pirmosiomis rugsėjo dienomis. 2004 m. Mindaugo Kavaliausko įkurtą festivalį organizuoja viešoji įstaiga „Šviesos raštas“. Festivalį KAUNAS PHOTO finansuoja Lietuvos kultūros taryba.
