The 18th international photo art festival KAUNAS PHOTO turns into adulthood and reflects on the theme of age

In 2021, the 18th international photo art festival KAUNAS PHOTO will hold its opening tours on September 2 and 3 with the exhibition openings of fourteen artists from different countries. The programme of the 18th KAUNAS PHOTO festival will focus on the threshold of adulthood, becoming an adult, the pros and cons, stories and feelings of being young, teenager, parent, mid-aged, retired, with or without grandchildren, hobby, job, retirement savings meeting the sunset of life. The exhibitions and events of the festival will be related to general or specific issues of life choices, crisis, joys, traditions, stereotypes, taboos, social norms and the impact of big data society on age groups. The open call to the festival, which received over a hundred proposals, showed that a critical mass of photographers is exploring an aging society, its joys and challenges.

Although traditionally the winner of the festival’s competition KAUNAS PHOTO STAR is announced at the Kaunas Photography Gallery, this year, due to the renovation of Vilnius Street, the gallery was closed, therefore, the works of the finalists of the KAUNAS PHOTO STAR 2021 competition are integrated into the festival’s programme and are shown in the outdoor spaces as well as in the galleries, cultural and art venues of Kaunas.

KAUNAS PHOTO 2021 programme in Kaunas will showcase nine photography exhibitions in indoor venues throughout September. Continuing the tradition of open-air exhibitions started in 2014, this year the festival will present seven outdoor exhibitions, placed in Chechnya Square, Kalniečių and Draugystės parks, A. Juozapavičiaus, V. Putvinskio streets, near Kaunas Castle, Vienybės Square. The festival’s outdoor exhibitions will be on display until the end of October.

The artistic program of this year’s festival is curated by a joint team: Mindaugas Kavaliauskas, Kristina Juraitė, Donatas Stankevičius, Fred Boucher and Karolina Krinickaitė. On September 3 – exhibition opening marathon of KAUNAS PHOTO festival

On Thursday, September 3, 2020, the works of the Finalists of the XVII KAUNAS PHOTO festival’s jubilee 10th edition of the photography contest KAUNAS PHOTO STAR on the topic “Peripheral Visions” will spread across galleries, museums and outdoor venues of Kaunas city. The opening marathon will wind all over Kaunas: the route will start at 1 p.m. in Chechnya Square, then continue in Kalniečiai Park (near Savanorių Ave.), drop in to Žemieji Šančiai district, visit the Center of the city, and, making its way through the Old Town, will finish at 6 p.m. at the door of Kaunas Photography Gallery, where the Winner of KAUNAS PHOTO STAR 2020 Award will be announced. The evening will continue at Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum with the screening of the Finalists’ series and an artist talk by the photographer Dovilė Dagienė-DoDa. The opening events are free of charge and the exact timetable is at the end of this announcement. The open competition KAUNAS PHOTO STAR has been organized since 2010 by the festival KAUNAS PHOTO aiming to honor the future stars of photography.

Due to the pandemic, the festival had to find solutions and adjust the format of the exhibition openings. Every year photographers from foreign countries come to Lithuania, participate in the openings of the exhibitions and present their works directly, but this year they will speak to the audience through the screen. Many of the opening events, presenting the works by foreign photographers, will feature pre-recorded videos in which the authors will talk about their work. The artists and spectators themselves, who cannot come to the opening events, will not miss them either – the KAUNAS PHOTO festival will broadcast the exhibitions live on the festival’s Facebook page.

The topic “Peripheral Visions” has drawn the interest of Lithuanian photographers

The 17th edition of KAUNAS PHOTO festival was planned to celebrate the periphery, the province, the outback, l’arrière-pays. The COVID-19 pandemic and the fight against it imposed new rules and conceptions, and KAUNAS PHOTO festival invited photographers to present works to KAUNAS PHOTO STAR 2020 competition on the topic “Peripheral Visions”, expecting works aiming to look at what is on the margin, just across the window or the border that we can or cannot cross, to discover the spaces, places, lands, areas that usually were in the periphery of the vision. In 2020, the festival turns the spotlight on what became important, what was less so, what was taken for granted or simply undermined until now.

The traditional, already the 10th KAUNAS PHOTO STAR contest has attracted the interest of photographers from all over the world: 170 series by photographers from 38 countries were submitted to the open call. The organizers were pleased by the fact that Lithuanian photographers, who submitted 19 series to the competition, were among the most active participants. This was the first time in a decade of the history of KAUNAS PHOTO STAR, that Lithuanian photographers have formed the largest group of participants. Of these, two Lithuanian series made their way to the finals. The finalists were selected by a nine-member international jury panel of photography experts from Lithuania, Poland, Denmark, France, Italy and New Zealand.

Instead of eight – top 10

Although the jury of the KAUNAS PHOTO STAR contest planned to select eight finalists, due to the very dense vicinity of the shortlist, the commission decided to expand the list to top ten. The ten KAUNAS PHOTO STAR Award 2020 Finalists are:

  • Chiara Panariti & Gianfranco Ferraro (Italy) Cronostasi
  • Michał Adamski (Poland) I dyed my hair again
  • Arne Piepke (Germany) Anecdotes from an unfamiliar Land
  • Hannes Jung (Germany) The Wolf Is Present
  • Dovilė Dagienė (Lithuania) Plant Memory / Wooden Synagogues

  • Mikhail Lebedev (Russia) Restaurateurs by chance
  • Guillem Vidal (Spain) Forgotten playground
  • Lina Margaitytė & Marius Krivičius (Lithuania) Temporarily Open

The works of all finalists will be displayed in a joint exhibition in various galleries, museums and open air venues of Kaunas city.

KAUNAS PHOTO festival will introduce students to the Lithuanian- Australian photography legend

KAUNAS PHOTO festival, now in it’s 14th edition, starts the educational programme “Olegas Truchanas: Lithuanian and Australian legend” for the regional schools on the 3rd of May. The introduction to the famous Lithuanian expat’s expeditions into the wild of Tasmania and his photographic work focusing on ecology will be presented by the culturologist, ethnographer, traveller Jonas Nekrašius and KAUNAS PHOTO director Mindaugas Kavaliauskas.

Jonas Nekrašius presents Olegas Truchanas in Kražiai Žygimantas Liauksminas high school.

The goals of the educational programme are to introduce the undeservedly unknown photographer to Lithuanian youths, and also nurture their connection to nature, ecological awareness and public spirit. Olegas Truchanas and his merit in the fields of conservation and photography will be presented in a documentary, screened at schools, and followed by a discussion. KAUNAS PHOTO director Mindaugas Kavaliauskas and Jonas Nekrašius will visit five schools: Kražiai Žygimantas Liauksminas high school in Kelmė district, Pakruojis „Žemyna“ secondary school, Joniškis “Aušra” high school, Leipalingis secondary school and Seirijai A.Žmuidzinavičius high school.

Jonas Nekrašius presents Olegas Truchanas in Kražiai Žygimantas Liauksminas high school.

Olegas Truchanas, the most famous Lithuanian- Australian, was born in Šiauliai in 1923 and died in 1972 during the photographic expedition in Tasmania. He moved to Australia after the second world war and and then settled in Tasmania. His passion for traveling and exploring extended into his photographic practice, which he then used to educate and raise ecological awareness. Whilst still in Lithuania, Olegas learned to care and look after every part of nature, however in Australia at the time nature was seen as a resource to be used. His day job was at a company building hydroelectric power plants, however he dedicated all of his spare time for the care and conservation of Tasmanian landscape, at least through photography. His job didn’t allow him to publicly speak out against the hydroelectric power plants and the effect it has on the landscape. However Olegas Truchanas travelled around the country organizing events, where he would project his photographic slides accompanied by dramatic music, and these were attended by thousands of people. The legend was born.

Mindaugas Kavaliauskas emphasizes that the Olegas Truchanas story is unique, because stunning nature photographs started a powerful community movement, that changed the public view on ecology and conservation, set up nature reserves, and even influenced the change of political powers in Tasmania.

Presentation on Olegas Truchanas in Kražiai Žygimantas Liauksminas high school.

KAUNAS PHOTO photography festival organizes photography workshops for schools second year in a row. Complimenting the annual programme of exhibitions by Lithuanian and international artists, public lectures, talks by photographers, critics, collectors and curators and guided tours, these creative workshops provide practical knowledge about photography as well as nurture creativity, consciousness and communal spirit.
